How I UseBestMail Myself

As the author of UseBestMail, I of course use it for all my email.
So I thought this would be a perfect way to illustrate how to use it most effectively. Of course, you are welcome to use its various features as you choose. But either way, this may give you a head start.
To begin with, I have to deal with lots of mail from strangers whose email addresses I don't know in advance. But because my email address is published I get lots of spam. For this reason, I use the following settings:
These settings permit only good mail to be downloaded. All non-stamped, non-whitelist mail is held on my ISP's mail server and is not downloaded to my computer. Only stamped mail, mail on my whitelist, and mail I force to download (more on this later) arrives in my email program's inbox.
Now you might logically ask, doesn't this mail held on the server accumulate indefinitely? That's a logical question. The answer is that it doesn't, and here's why. First of all, notice that under "Automatic Response Messages" the "Use Challenge/Response with Whitelist" option is selected. This means that mail from unknown senders is challenged, i.e., the sender is asked to prove that he is human, not robot. It sounds insulting, but it's done very politely. Robots won't answer the challenge, but your friends will. When a challenge message is responded to a special stamped response is sent back to your UseBestMail software, which then matches the response with the held mail, and you receive the held message next time you check your mail. This is because the sender's address has been added to your whitelist.
So what about the spam? Doesn't it accumulate? No, it doesn't. Notice, above, the setting for "Hold Bad Mail for (Days). I use 3 days. You can use more or fewer. This setting does two things. First, it holds mail long enough for a challenge to be responded to. If the challenge is responded to you get the mail automatically in your inbox. If the challenge is responded to too late, you get the challenge response message and you can apologize and ask the sender to try again after manually adding him to your whitelist. But spam messages are also challenged. The vast majority of them come from phony addresses, so your UseBestMail program will receive back a "cannot deliver this mail" message. The software automatically matches up these "cannot deliver" messages with the spams they are generated by and deletes both. Neat, isn't it?
And finally, messages that don't receive a response to challenges and don't receive a "non-deliver" (or UseBestmail can't interpret the non-delivery in some cases), these will expire after the 3 days (or whatever you set). So your spam is automatically dispatched to where it belongs without your need to intervene.
OK, so now we see how a person can answer a challenge and his email can be received. But what about mail from automated sources? Suppose you've just subscribed to a newsletter or expect confirmation of a purchase? You don't want this message to be lost or deleted as spam. For this UseBestMail provides the Preview feature.
The Preview feature permits you to view the mail that is being held on the server and decide for yourself how it should be treated. You can delete it, prevent a challenge from being sent, force it to download, or add it to the whitelist. You really don't need to do any of this unless it is an email from a new and unknown source. In this case, you probably want to add it to the whitelist or force a download. Either of these actions will result in downloading the messge to your inbox the next time you check your mail. (Be sure to set the checkmark, above, at the "Preview Bad Message Handling" option to enable this feature.)
And that's the way I UseBestMail. You can use a variety of other settings that suit your needs. But any way you do it, you eliminate the spam.
The ultimate answer, is to convince more of your friends and fellow correspondents to UseBestMail themselves. Then you'll get a spam-free channel and absolutely no hassle because the mail is stamped and sails right through.
Hope this helps,
